Anna's Book

byGeorge MacBeth. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, $16.95. There was, in the 1890s, a Swedish attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon, and Mr. MacBeth has based a novel on that ill-conceived affair. The story is told alternately through the journal-letter of a scholarly young man, nephew of August Strindberg, who is on the expedition and the recollections of his fiancée, a high-spirited young woman who despises balloons in general and the Eagle in particular. Mr. MacBeth, an eloquent and witty writer, makes these frustrated lovers thoroughly interesting people and their adventures at home in Sweden or adrift in the Arctic equally absorbing.
