by Graves. Scribner’s, $15.95.
The poet of A Shropshire Lad was a crusty, austere professor of Latin who devoted himself to the reconstruction of uncertain classical texts. Behind that scholarly façade lurked a rather wistful, very generous chap with a taste for boys, pornography, raffish humor, and romps in France and Italy. Mr. Graves has written a good biography of the sober don. He can only imply the light-foot lad, for Housman discreetly suppressed all specific evidence of his indiscretions.
