Plains Song

by Wright Morris.Harper & Row, $8.95. In his latest novel, Mr. Morris sets out to demonstrate that in spite of changing social conditions, life for a Nebraska farm woman and all her female descendants is a dreary bore. For this purpose he omits both the pleasurable and the unforeseen, and his farm, consequently, is a strange and awesome place. Not only is there no good food, there are no contretemps. No cow bloats herself in the corn patch, no pigs get loose, no chickens get the pip. Gloom regardless, this is Never-Never Land, and not to be taken seriously.
