Mr. Horowitz believes that the character of the United States was determined by conditions in the first east coast colonies, as to some extent it undoubtedly was. He also believes that it is worthwhile to offer this surface-skimming history of the years 1607-1776 on the grounds that few people now realize that the early settlers were as wily and greedy and the Indians as bewildered and ferocious as anywhere else on the continent. He may be overestimating public ignorance. Bibliography, index, maps.
