The Magic World of Ivan Generalić

by Nebojša Thomašević.Rizzoli, $27.50. One cannot refer to a Generalic canvas because this Yugoslavian paints his fantasies backside-to on glass, a technique which can produce startling three-dimensional effects. Trees resembling coral growths leap out of the foreground while pink unicorns gambol through the infinitely receding depths of the grove. The text, based on conversations with the artist, explains both his subject matter and his reasons, rooted in a farmer’s love for the countryside, for ignoring literal reality. Translated by John Shepley. Color plates with notes, list of exhibitions.
