by John Walker.Abrams. $22.50. This is a superb book. The paintings, admirably reproduced, include some officially unfinished works that languished for years in storage vaults at the National Gallery, mistaken for mere old canvas. Retrieved and cleaned, they prove to be glorious arrangements in pure color, suited to this century rather than to Turner’s own time– but then. Turner was always ahead of his time. Mr. Walker’s text is learned, which is to be expected in a fine art book, and also gracefully and wittily written, a pleasure much less predictable.
Fifty-six hand-tipped color plates. 74 black and whites, notes, bibliography, index.
