by E. L. Doctorow. Random House, S8.95.
Here is an exceptionally original and pleasurable novel. The author combines real and imaginary characters, confuses real and imaginary events, and out of this high-handed mix creates a tragicomic panorama of the ferment of one society in the early years of this century. The book is packed with intelligence and audacity.
