Going to America

by Terry Coleman. Pantheon, $8.95. The terrible story of the Irish famine refugees has been told before, but there was a great deal of emigration from the rest of Britain to the United States going on at the same period. Mr. Coleman has written a thoroughly interesting history of the whole emigrant traffic, with much detail on individual experiences, the ramshackle lack of government control on both sides of the Atlantic, and the intractability of shipping companies.
