Across the Top of the World

by Wally Herbert. Putnam, $7.95. The man who thought up and commanded the affair describes the British Trans-Arctic Expedition, which in 1968-1969 dogsledded from Point Barrow, Alaska, to Spitzbergen. Walked, in short, across the frozen ocean via the North Pole. It was a well-organized trek, with air support, but a fiendish journey all the same. The author describes it with energy and honest pride.
