The Great Age of Fresco

by Millard Meiss. Braziller, $30.00. Repairs after the flood in Florence necessitated detaching and cleaning numerous frescoes, a process that revealed the preliminary drawings behind them and restored colors obscured by candle smoke and inept repainting. A selection of these resurrections is presented by Mr. Meiss, in fine color plates and a text that tells a great deal about fresco technique and the painters who used it. A major advantage of this lovely book is that it permits one to see at close range work that normally has to be viewed at long distance and through ecclesiastic murk.
