W. C. Fields

(Voice tracks from movies; Decca DL-79164). The great man at his acerbic best on children, women, liquor, and other important subjects. The introductory comments by one Gary Ownes are inane, but Fields rises imperturbably above such petty annoyances.

Ives: “Concord” Sonata (John Kirkpatrick, pianist; Columbia MS-7192). A terror to play, a joy to hear. One of Ives’s most remarkable and original works, and Kirkpatrick knows how to bring it alive.
