Shostakovitch: Suite From the Incidental Music to Hamlet, Opus 32; Kirchner: Toccata for Strings, Solo Winds, and Percussion

Short Reviews

(Jorge Mester conducting Louisville Symphony; Louisville LS-683). Shostakovitch’s 1932 score may not be very Shakespearean, but it has a crude vigor and gusto; Kirchner’s 1955 toccata is a tightly knit and attractive sound mosaic. Altogether, one of the best of the recent Louisville “First Edition” releases.
