The Blacking Factory and Pennsylvania Gothic

Short Reviews:

by Wilfrid Sheed. Farrar, Straus & Giroux, $5.50. The prose is clear as a cat’s eye and direct as a rifle shot, a great pleasure in these days of fun-house baroque. Mr. Sheed’s tales of the lingering effects of adolescent psychic disturbance lack the basic storyteller’s magic, but have every merit that can be supplied by intelligence, knowledge, and civilized taste.
