T. H. White

by Sylvia Townsend Warner. Viking, $6.50. The author of The Once and Future King was an unusual man — son of an abominable woman, reluctant homosexual, solitary, sportsman, lover of red setters, falconer, and drunk. White was capable of exceptional kindness (the real kind, requiring time, tact, and money) and also of a boorishness that drove his friends to sputtering rage. Miss Warner has reconstructed this odd, sad, attractive character with much success, helped by White himself, who was an incorrigible journal keeper.
