The Guardian Angels

Two guardian angels awaited us, motionless in the darkness.
The church was closed, the saints asleep.
The rain that fell throughout our journey
Was coming clown incessantly outside.
No tears came to my eyes;
I saw things clearly, I felt indifferent,
But noticed noises and shadows.
You were smiling, cheerful and a little malicious.
Then I heard a sound of sobbing,
Of agony rising to desperation.
A smell of death moved up and down the steps.
Suddenly I saw that you were barefoot,
Your hair dripping, your face contorted;
And I watched you cross the empty nave
And disappear out therein the night and rain.
