This 429-page handbook to England, Scotland. Wales, North Ireland, and the Coastal Islands might fairly conservatively be described as encyclopedic. Whether you want to know about the green fees at Royal St. George’s or visiting hours at the Duke of Norfolk’s mansion or the mores of pub life or the possibilities of jazzing up your holiday by participating in a “Temperance Festival” — Mr. Joseph has the answer. The author’s avowed love affair with the British Isles leads him to discern enticements in places which, as a former resident of this territory, I would heartily dis-recommend. But even a native of Britain would find this sprightly manual, with its vast fund of folklore, a very helpful source of reference on a trip around his own country.
