Hilton’s latest novel is centered on a Dublin actress who becomes a leading lady on Broadway, and an American producer of plays and films who is something of an artistic genius and an impossibly difficult human being. The story deals with Carey Arundel’s youthful marriage to Paul Saffron; the tensions that cause them to separate; Carey’s attempt to make a “normal” life for herself as the wife of a rich businessman; and her reinvolvement in Saffron’s career. Mr. Hilton has reworked a familiar drama of the theater with urbane competence, but he has brought nothing new to it.
