The Beloved Doctor: In Memoriam: Dr. William H. Welch

You chose secure delight who so combined
With lusty comradeship bright solitude —
A clockless room where the untemporal mind
Attentive only to the common good
Searched the dark chemistry of being, sought
Residua of power against man’s pain,
Counting each pregnant particle there caught,
Truth’s cloudy hint, an incandescent gain;
And found this enviable recompense:
Remembrance rescued from the level grave,
The pure flame kindled in our bone, our breath,
Burning in quickened hands — here where you gave
To life more life, your gift will ever hence
Ride in the memoried cell high over death.
