Miscellany. Ii

RADIO NOTE

We’ve grown so casual and so democratic
With interstellar space, we must prepare
To hear some night, in wildly stuttering static:
Stand by! Archangel Gabriel on the air!

WAR TALK

We talk, and talk, and talk; our red-hot words
Are beaten into cannon balls and swords . . .
And presently a million boys lie dead
With all the words they had to say, unsaid.

CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR

Locked in a bare cell with the Holy Ghost,
He fought his fellow prisoner all night.
Never two warriors closed in such a fight . . .
Never one fighter failed at such a cost.

CATHEDRAL OF SAINT JOHN THE DIVINE

Good Saint, they’ve housed you now in costly stone,
Great soaring arch and plinth and polished rock
You who in exile, beggared and alone,
Reported Heaven itself from one bare rock.

LADY PATRIOT, HOMING INTO HARBOR

She hailed America, declared her pride,
Her love, declared our flag should never fall,
Declared for this our fathers fitly died
But, disembarking, scarce declared at all.
