Rob Schmitz, on the ‘Street of Eternal Happiness’

Editor’s Note: This article previously appeared in a different format as part of The Atlantic’s Notes section, retired in 2021.

Last night, at the Atlantic’s offices in Washington, I had a chance to interview my friend Rob Schmitz, longtime Marketplace correspondent based in Shanghai, about his new book Street of Eternal Happiness. It’s an excellent book, and I thought the discussion was very interesting. You can see it below.

The first 30 minutes are me asking questions of Rob; the second 30 are questions from the audience. It ends with a five-minute lightning round in which we take, and Rob answers, ten questions back to back. Thanks to Rob for the book and the visit, and to the Atlantic’s superb events staff for making this possible.
