A Hong Kong tycoon is very upset that his daughter just married another woman, so he's doing what any father would do and offer $65 million bounty to any man than can woo her away from her lesbian ways.
Shipping magnate Cecil Chao announced the bounty in the South China Morning Post. "I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted," said Chao to the Hong Kong Daily. Gigi Chao, Cecil's daughter, came out as a lesbian last week when she announced she was married to a woman—which is why we are where we are today with Cecil and his ridiculous contest.
It's been reported that anti-gay sentiment in China is so palpable that an estimated 70 percent of the country's gay men are married to women, and that there is an industry thriving on setting up gay men and lesbian women into fake marriages to fool their parents. "Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work," Cecil told the South China Morning Post, seemingly affirming that lesbians cannot be good, talented, volunteering, and respectful of their parents. It's hard to know if Cecil will actually pay someone $65 million when push comes to shove, but apparently Cecil's plan has already worked — well, somewhat worked, as Gigi's social networks have been inundated with friend requests and new followers. (And just to put $65 million in perspective, Ryan Gosling's reported net worth is between $36 million-$50 million.)
