Michael Phelps was the first former Olympic golden boy to fall at this year's games. (Some think Usain Bolt could be next.) Phelps came in fourth in the 400 meter individual medley on Saturday. It's the first time Phelps has failed to medal in an event since the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Most people thought the race was going to be a fight between Phelps and teammate Ryan Lochte. Instead, Phelps failed and Lochte dominated. He won the race by a three seconds, and earned America's first gold medal this year. Phelps still has five events to compete in, so he has plenty of opportunities to redeem himself. [ESPN]
While NBC's tape-delay strategy seems to be working, their streaming efforts aren't up to snuff. The Phelps-Lochte showdown is going to be a major part of Saturday's primetime broadcast, but those who couldn't wait and wanted to watch the race early on NBC's streaming option complained the stream was behind. First it seemed like the stream wasn't even going to be offered, and then when it finally appeared (moments before the race was about to start) viewers realized the stream was behind. People were seeing results tweeted by reporters before the race was over on their screen. NBC can't win. [SB Nation]
America's sweetheart Hope Solo should have celebrating the U.S. women's soccer team's 3-0 victory over Colombia on Saturday, but comments made by former American soccer star Brandi Chastain during the broadcast really set her off. Chastain criticized American defender Rachel Buehler after she lost the ball at one point. Solo slammed Chastain over Twitter after the game:
Its important 2 our fans 2 enjoy the spirit of the olympics. Its not possible when sum1 on air is saying that a player is the worst defender!— Hope Solo (@hopesolo) July 28, 2012
Solo was busy on the field when Chastain made her comments, so someone must have tipped them off after the game. Solo was clearly mad enough that she felt the need to come to her defender's defense. Chastain is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner, and became super famous for taking off her shirt after scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Women's World Cup. Deadspin has the audio feed of Chastain's comments. [Deadspin]
Katniss Everdeen earned the first gold medal for District 12 in Saturday archery competition. No, that's not right. An Italian won. But there was so much drama! The American team was ahead on the scorecards going into the final arrow of the match. The only way they could win was with a perfect bullseye, and, just like a sports movie, the Italian team nailed it. The U.S. got silver, their first medal of the games. [CBS Sports]
Medal count! China's ahead of everyone right now with six medals, four of which are gold. The U.S. and Italy both have five. Japan, South Korea, and Brazil have three. A bunch of countries have at least one medal. That's it right now. Kazachstan, Uzbekistan and North Korea all have one medal. Canada has nothing.
