Libya's National Transitional Council says that Muammar Qaddafi was buried at dawn on Tuesday, in a secret desert location. He was buried alongside his son Muatassim and Islamic prayers were read over the bodies. The undisclosed location is meant to prevent his grave site from becoming a shrine — or a target for desecration.

Qaddafi's body had been on display in a cold storage facility for the last several days as the new government figured out how to proceed. Officials wanted to give Libyans an opportunity to see that he was really dead, but have also been dealing with accusations that Qaddafi may have been murdered after his capture.

While the rebels turned rulers try to restore calm and order to the country, more questions are arising about possible atrocities carried out by the rebels turned leaders, against Qaddafi supporters in the final days of the conflict.

Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, the chairman of the Council says Qaddafi's death will be under scrutiny, even as The New York Times reports that site of a possible massacre was cleaned up yesterday, without anyone from the interm government coming to investigate. More than 50 bodies were discovered at a hotel used by the rebels during the conflict, many of them apparently shot with their hands tied behind their backs.
