More than Roger Federer's earliest exit in ten years, this year's French Open will be remembered for that time Prince (and his scepter) dropped in to watch fellow royal Rafael Nadal play a match at Roland Garros.
Prince is here watching Rafael Nadal--heard he also invited Rafa to his concert last night, but I doubt the 8-time champ attended. #RG14— Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) June 2, 2014
It was a short match, Nadal dispatched with Serbia's Dusan Lajovic in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-1. Nadal will go on to play fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the quarterfinals, a rematch of last year's final...but that's hardly the important news here.
Flanked by supermodel Damaris Lewis, Prince's arrival immediately started speculation that Nadal and Prince could have some kind of Zooey Deschanel-esque collaboration. Okay, it wasn't wide speculation, but it doesn't seem too much to ask of the universe to will "Purple Clay" into being.
For now, we'll just have to settle for a superior performance by Nadal. At one point in the match, he won 17 straight points, approaching the long-coveted Golden Set.
