The genus of films based on canceled-too-soon TV shows is finally getting another entry in the form of the Veronica Mars movie. Following a massively successful Kickstarter campaign that mets its goal in a number of hours, not days, there's now a full trailer for the film, as opposed to behind-the-scenes promo material.
It's been a few years, but a lot of familiar faces pop up in the neo-noir trappings: Veronica, Piz, Logan, Dick, Wallace, Mac, Deputy Leo. Deputy Leo! Did you forget that Max Greenfield was on other shows before he was on New Girl? Some of us did.
New additions to the cast include Jerry O'Connell, playing the brother of Sheriff Don Lamb, who died in Season 3. He has a terrible hairdo, just in case it wasn't clear how scuzzy his character is supposed to be. Jamie Lee Curtis is there too, and for about half a second you can see Kristen Bell's actual husband, Dax Shepard.
Still, it's been six years since the show went off the air, and since the shipping culture has crossed the rubicon into the mainstream, so it should be interesting to see how fans react to new material. Will they ship Veronica and Piz? Veronica and Logan? Logan and Piz?? It's anybody's guess.
The second-best high-school-set neo-noir of the mid-aughts (first place: Brick) comes out March 14.
