Lest you think Gravity was getting left out of the awards circuit, Alfonso Cuarón's space epic made a big showing at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, picking up 11 nominations, when nominations were announced earlier today.
Though Gravity picked up nominations for best director, best film, and best actress, it also has the benefit of being a strong competitor in technical categories. Meanwhile, perceived Oscar frontrunners 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle are close behind — each came away with 10 nominations. Actors from Hustle—Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence—are set to compete in all four acting categories.
Not to be overlooked? Captain Phillips— "a quiet performer so far in the awards season," Catherine Shoard at The Guardian mentioned—garnered nine nominations. These honors come just a day after director Paul Greengrass came away with a DGA nomination.
