20 Feet From Stardom, the crowd pleasing Oscar-nominated documentary about the lives of backup singers, will hopefully get the TV series and the Broadway musical it deserves thanks to Mick Jagger.
Jagger, who is featured in the documentary, is talking about adapting 20 Feet for both the small screen and the stage, Tatiana Siegel of The Hollywood Reporter wrote. Jagger and Victoria Pearman would serve as executive producers on the TV show, which would be a scripted drama series focusing on modern day backup singers. The Broadway version would possibly feature singers that appeared in the film, like Darlene Love and Lisa Fischer.
The movie, directed by Morgan Neville, is a fantastically entertaining, and at times heartbreaking, look into the lives of the women (they are mostly women) whose voices provide some of the hooks that define the songs you love. (You know, "...it's just a shot away." All hail Merry Clayton.) The documentary is well constructed and concise, but also leaves you wanting more. There's a vast amount of material to mine here and it's exciting that Jagger is seeking to do so.
