We sort of have no idea what's going on in the trailer for the upcoming Edge of Tomorrow, but we can tell that Emily Blunt is just as important to this movie as Tom Cruise, and that's a good thing.
It appears the movie is about Cruise's character being forced relive the same battle over again repeatedly—like Groundhog Day with weapons—but the trailer also puts Blunt's character front and center of the marketing. She's another soldier who helps train Cruise's character, and the shots of her looking battle-worn and heroic seem to have the same weight as the shots of Cruise looking battle-worn and heroic.
It's not every day you see a movie that focuses on a female soldier, without making her exclusively eye candy in a body suit or engaged in a fish-out-of-water scenario. (We're assuming the time being the marketing for this movie isn't totally inaccurate.) Last year's Pacific Rim had Rinko Kikuchi as a pilot, but with promos that focused more on the monsters than the non-stars in the movie, you wouldn't necessarily know it.
So props, for now, to Edge of Tomorrow. It could end up being a terrible movie, but this at least should be cheered.
