The Killing's improbable run on AMC has been cut short once again, but this time it likely won't wake from the dead. Deadline's Nellie Andreeva reported Tuesday night that AMC axed the murder mystery show, a little over a year after it canceled it for the first time. Though the third season of the show won over some critics—like our Richard Lawson who wrote that it had earned a fourth season pickup—ratings didn't match improvement, holding steady with its second season.
The Killing had already dodged death before. The show lost favor with viewers following its first season after it didn't resolve the central question of who killed Rosie Larsen. In its second season ratings fell nearly 30 percent, Lesley Goldberg and Michael O'Connell reported at The Hollywood Reporter. After its first cancellation, the company that produces the show, Fox Television Studios, began talks with Netflix about carrying the third season but ultimately AMC announced that it would return.
Though we've learned to never say never with The Killing, it seems like it's dead for real this time. "We’re especially gratified to have orchestrated a unique deal with AMC for Season 3 that included a bold partnership with Netflix," Fox Television studios said, per Andreeva. "While we would have loved to produce a fourth season for AMC, FTVS is immensely grateful to everyone involved with this moving series."
The demise of The Killing means that AMC will soon be operating largely with a new slate of shows with Breaking Bad set to end and Low Winter Sun faring poorly. Mad Men is also set to conclude after its upcoming season. The network recently ordered two new series — computing drama Halt and Catch Fire and Revolutionary War drama Turn — and is working on a sci-fi pilot to be directed by Jonathan Demme. And, of course, they've always got The Walking Dead, which brings in the ratings. But whatever happens, it's clear that the AMC network is going to be a very different place in a couple of years.
