Holy Haymitch, it's here. The first teaser trailer for the upcoming Hunger Games movie, based on the hugely successful book series, has arrived! And it looks good!
For the uninitiated: The Hunger Games is about a dystopic North America where each year two children from each of 12 districts ruled by an oligarchic capital city are forced to compete in a fight-to-the-death melee that is televised for everyone's fear and enjoyment. The books (there are three in all) are shockingly dark for young adult fiction, full of lots of gruesome killing and, well, more gruesome killing. A movie version was sure to disappoint, because movie versions almost always disappoint (well, except for Harry Potter), but this little clip reel is actually sorta promising?
The director Gary Ross has showed an aptitude for contrived places before in his wonderful Pleasantville, so really it shouldn't be that much of a surprise that he seems to have created a well-realized future world in this movie. There's the bleak home of our hero Katniss, there's the glittery weirdopolis of the Capitol, and there, in brief flashing form, is the creepy beauty of the soon-to-be blood-filled arena. While some of the casting choices still seem a bit off -- they dyed the blond boy brunet and the brunet boy blond! -- the important thing is that Jennifer Lawrence seems like a good fit for the lead. It's just her in the woods for about half of the story, so it's important that we like her.
There's not much else to be said about this brief trailer, execpt: Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!! Please excuse the mature adults in your midst who are currently running around in circles on the floor. This is just very exciting for some of us. Hunger Games! Live and in color! The odds really are in our favor.
