Reality Check

Ackerman flags a new BBC/ABC poll out of Afghanistan finding surprisingly favorable views of foreign troops among Afghans:

[P]erhaps the poll is an outlier. But if not, then Gen. McChrystal may have been on to something when he contended that the behavior of U.S. forces was more important than the presence of U.S. forces in terms of Afghan perceptions of occupation.

Maybe if we remove the gung-ho Cheneyism, we might get back to the decency, humaneness and professionalism that once was globally understood as the core of the US military. The vast majority of servicemembers, of course, have never lowered their standards, even under Cheney. But the leadership from above was a disgrace.
