The Fate Of Food

Tom Laskawy checks in on industrial agriculture:

Big Food also insists that genetically modified crops will make up for whatever shortcomings industrial agriculture may face in the future. But despite decades of research, GM crop yield growth remains flat, and companies like Monsanto don't deny that they are, at best, decades away from rectifying that. Meanwhile, persistent droughts in crucial agricultural regions like Californiaa state that grows almost half of the nation's vegetables, fruits, and nutscontinue to vex large food producers. It may yet be that waterthe most basic ingredient of allwill prove to be Big Food's Achilles' heel.
