Marvel Comics fans: Were you watching The View this morning, as we assume you always do? Because if you weren't, you missed Whoopi Goldberg passing Thor's hammer to a woman.

After Marvel promised the announcement of "an all-new thundering title" on today's episode of The View – your one-stop shop for all comic book news, naturally – some assumed we'd be getting a new superhero flick. Instead, we got to hear Goldberg deliver a huge bit of female-focused comics news to hit the Marvelverse in some time: Thor will now be female.

"Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up. He is no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his," Goldberg said. "And for the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman."

In a press release, Marvel shed little light on exactly who the new Thor will be – only that somehow the current Thor will become unworthy of wielding his hammer, Mjölnir.

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor," Marvel editor Wil Moss said in the statement. "Well, it’s time to update that inscription."

Jason Aaron, who has written previous series of Thor and other Marvel titles, emphasized in the release that this isn't a spin-off character. "This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita," he said. "This is THOR."

Naturally, The View's departing host Jenny McCarthy had important insights to share on this news: "She’s got super-powered boobies."

The new comic series is set to begin in October.
