The notion that most celebrities lack basic human empathy has less to do with their ivory tower, velvet roped-off existences and more to do with the fact that most celebrities were grown in laboratories and raised by animatronic nurses. You know? They are just not equipped to care about what normal people think or do. To this day the only time Jessica Chastain feels genuine emotion is when she sees animatronic ghouls in haunted house attractions. But this is not to say that ALL celebrities are unfeeling famebots. Like Short Circuit's Johnny 5 getting struck by lightning and gaining both sentience and a sassy 'tude, a fair amount of celebrities have suddenly developed a knack for human kindness and today we should talk about them! Because this week a lot of celebs have been doing some great things and their deeds should put a smile on your face. Ladies and friends: Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Emma Stone, and Andrew Garfield all seem very cool!
A lot can be said about Taylor Swift's highly shrewd career choices and her knack for massaging the emotions and affections of her fans, but it's hard to deny the power of a megastar commenting on her fans' Instagram photos. BuzzFeed has a fairly amazing roundup of all the times Swift has taken the time to personally respond to fans' photos and it may do more to make you like her than any number of 'I'm a lovelorn underdog' ballads could. Here's an example of one of Swift's random acts of commenting on a stranger's photo:
I'm so sorry you sprained your ankle. That's AWFUL and I'll bet it hurt so much. Ugggh I'm so sorry. At least you have an excellent sense of humor about it and can laugh at yourself! Thanks for listening to my music in these not-so-mobile times you're facing. Get well soon, Kaleigh!! (Auto correct tried to change the spelling of your name 4 times but I persevered. VICTORY.)
By doing things like equating a fan's attendance at her concert (during her #1 money-generating tour!) to a time they once simply hung out together, Swift writes to her fans like an estranged bestie might. She offers advice and words of encouragement and yeah, a lot of it borders on suspiciously manipulative as though she knows full well these comments will be seen in public and bring her good publicity, but still: Imagine being a fan and getting that kind of meaningful interaction with your idol out of nowhere. These are just good deeds, plain and simple. Credit where credit's due. [BuzzFeed]
Meanwhile Emma Stone (House Bunny) and Andrew Garfield (The Spidermen) were dining out and decided to pull a trick they'd attempted before: Exiting the restaurant in front of paparazzi and covering their faces with handwritten signs that bring attention to good causes. Us Weekly has the close-up photos, but the signs are as cute as they are meaningful. Stone's holding up a sign that reads:
Good morning! We were eating and saw a group of guys with cameras outside. And so we thought, let's try this again. We don't need the attention, but these wonderful organizations do: [arrow pointing]
And Garfield's sign reads:
www.youthmentoring.org
www.autismspeaks.org
(and don't forget:)
www.wwo.org
www.gildasclubnyc.orgHere's to the stuff that matters. Have a great day!
Not only was this a good way to politely decline to appear in paparazzi photos first thing in the morning, it seems like a clever way to trick the celebrity gossip machine into not being awful for once. Assuming those websites are real organizations and not, like, a Rick-rolling prank, I think it's safe to say that Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are worthy of our admiration this day, deal with it. Caution: This one is a bit of a bummer. Miley Cyrus, who, it's worth reminding you, is one of our most clever and creative celebrities (seriously!) took a break from trolling puritan busybodies and snapping bizarre Instagram selfies by reaching out to a gravely ill fan. E! Online describes the story of Caley Camarillo, in the life-threatening stages of cystic fibrosis, receiving a heartfelt video from Cyrus shortly before she passed away. Her mother ended up posting the video to Facebook along with these words:
Miley Cyrus sent this to Caley and she was able to watch it an hour before she had passed. We have video of Caley watching the vid but that we will save for ourselves. She managed to let out a smile. I take great comfort in this for some reason.
Here's a clip:
Later, before her show, Miley Cyrus tweeted the following:
Tonight's show is for @MissCaley 💖
— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) June 15, 2014
So, uh, yeah. It's certainly not unusual for a celebrity to reach out to an ailing fan, but it's still somehow surprising when it does happen. Why is that? Anyway, Miley Cyrus seems great. [E! Online]
Meanwhile Jaden Smith and Willow Smith sleep with snakes. "She has 10 sleeping in her room, and some aren’t in cages!" [Page Six]
Oh, Selena Gomez. First she was spotted hanging around with ex-boo Justin Bieber, and now the cops are getting noise complaints from her neighbors! Apparently yesterday she threw a house party (Bieber-related? Unclear!) and the music (which included live singing, as captured in the video below) was too much for the neighbors to bear. But according to Us Weekly, despite the drama queens next door complaining that "windows were rattling," responding police officers found a low-key and chill event and Gomez herself was very cool and well-mannered in dealing with the police officers. So no, no out of control teen orgy ragers at Selena Gomez's house. But it's safe to assume nobody sang any Miley Cyrus songs. [Us Weekly]
Anyway, here's a bit of that aforementioned live singing. Is it Selena Gomez herself, or does she merely hang out with very good singers? You be the judge!
Here's Lady Gaga's dog really learning the true meaning of misery:
Here's Colton Haynes, just doing his thing:
And finally, to bring it full circle, here's Taylor Swift holding her adorable new kitten. Or is it merely an afternoon snack? It is probably not an afternoon snack to be honest, that would be disgusting.
