Kristen Wiig Will Direct the 'Bridesmaids' Follow-Up She's Writing with Annie Mumolo

The women who brought you Bridesmaids—Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo—are thankfully writing another movie, and this time Wiig is expected to direct.

The women who brought you Bridesmaids — Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo — are thankfully writing another movie, and this time Wiig is expected to direct. Brooks Barnes of the New York Times reported that the two women are going to write, produce, star, and (in part) direct a movie for TriStar Productions about "best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with."

Bridesmaids was not only a huge hit, but also a groundbreaking moment for women in film. So much so that when it came out in 2011 Salon's Rebecca Traister wrote a piece titled "Seeing 'Bridesmaids' is a social responsibility." In the years since the movie came out Wiig has stretched her dramatic muscles, appearing in more serious roles in indie films. Mumolo has both appeared in supporting roles on TV and film, and taken on high profile writing projects, including the next David O. Russell-Jennifer Lawrence project, Joy.

It's thrilling however to see the two re-team, especially with the caveat that this time Wiig will be in the director's chair, especially when Bridesmaids hasn't exactly caused instant change in the industry. Barnes reports that "of the 129 films scheduled for wide release in 2014, only four come from female filmmakers." (Paul Feig, who also championed the female-driven comedy The Heat, directed Bridesmaids.)

Wiig and Mumolo told Barnes in a statement: “We’re very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”
