Brad Pitt Takes on All the Nazis with One Tank in the Trailer for ‘Fury’

Brad Pitt! Shia LaBeouf! Michael Peña! They're in a tank, they're behind enemy lines, and they're killin' Nazis, but it's more serious than the last time Brad was in a World War II uniform.

It’s been a few years since we had a good World War 2 blockbuster, but David Ayer’s Fury is aiming straight down the middle for the History Channel crowd. Brad Pitt is our gritty tank commander—accent-wise, a far cry from his work in Inglourious Basterds, but the premise is close to the same. He leads a rag-tag quintet inside a tank and spouts aphorisms like “ideals are peaceful. History is violent.” They have to duck behind enemy lines in Germany to kill Nazis, against overwhelming odds. Will they pull it off? Probably.

The ensemble includes Michael Peña (who did a great job in Ayer’s last film End of Watch), Jon Bernthal, Logan Lerman as the dew-eyed newbie who is scared of killing people, and Shia LaBeouf as a mustachioed soldier who probably would have gotten a lot more screen-time in this trailer if it had come out a couple years earlier. Ayer has so far made his career directing gritty L.A. crime dramas—Harsh Times, Street Kings, End of Watch and Sabotage make up his resume, and he also wrote The Fast and the Furious, Dark Blue, Training Day and S.W.A.T.

With Fury, he’s applying all that same close-to-the-ground grime to a period piece, and the film borrowed a genuine Tiger I tank (a first for a contemporary war film) to put its cast in. Fury comes out November 14 and has been flagged as a potential Oscar contender, but from this trailer it looks more like popcorn fodder for dads everywhere.
