According to Lesley Goldberg of The Hollywood Reporter, the show will come on the air in 2015. The introduction of scripted programming is a long time coming for the network, which first said it was taking aim at scripted programming back in 2011. One development came and went, but a pilot of The Royals came the second time around. It seems just everyone is getting into original scripted programming these days, with not only Internet entities like Netflix producing the likes of House of Cards but also networks like WGN America and E!'s reality rival Bravo jumping on board.
The Royals, which comes from the creator of One Tree Hill, stars Hurley as a character named Queen Helena, who apparently "will protect her family's image by any means necessary." The show is said to be "framed by William Shakespeare's Hamlet." What does that mean exactly? Who knows? It could be as Hamlet-y as, say, The Lion King, or someone could have said, "hey, Hamlet was also about a royal family with issues." Really, it all seems very much in E!'s wheelhouse. Who is Kris Jenner if not a modern day Queen Lear?
