The “freeze-out.” That’s what Taylor Swift calls her go-to move when she’s in a relationship and wants the upper hand – and make no mistake, if Swift wants the upper hand, she’ll get it.

In an interview with Glamour’s Cindi Leive, Swift dishes on how to get the power in a relationship:

“You don’t respond to any of his texts or calls until he does something desperate [like] shows up. Or he calls and leaves a voice mail. Something that makes it very clear to you that he’s interested.”

While playing games like that may seem petty or even cruel, not to mention very 21st century (leaving a voice mail is a fairly extreme act), Swift offers a fair defense. “Guarding your heart and protecting your dignity are a little bit more important than clarifying the emotions of someone who’s only texting you back three words. I’ve learned that from trying to figure out people who don’t deserve to be figured out,” she told Leive.

Taylor Swift graces the cover of the 75th anniversary issue of Glamour, which comes out next week. The preview of the interview made available probably solidifies the image everyone already has of her. You know the one: she’s a serial dater.

But this is not about Swift being a man-eater. This is about Taylor Swift being smart. She is the biggest pop star in the world; every move she makes is calculated to get Swift what she wants. She knows exactly what she's doing, and that includes whatever she does with the men she dates. You think her boyfriends are going to mess with her head? Not before Swift messes with theirs first.

What Swift is saying in this Glamour interview couldn't be clearer: she isn't going to be anyone's fool. She’s too clever for that.
