The teaser for Melissa McCarthy's latest is what we would imagine Spring Breakers would be like if McCarthy had anything to say about it. Her character, Tammy, is all swagger, dancing to "Gangsta's Paradise" as she prepares to rob an anonymous fast food joint. That is, until she gets into the restaurant and becomes oddly sweet. She asks for pies, in addition to cash. The man asks: "Do you like apple?" She responds, "I do like apple." She then salutes him when he mentions he's a veteran. The teaser ends on a great bit with a spoon.
The teaser feels more like a McCarthy SNL sketch than an actual trailer for the movie, which has an amazing cast beyond McCarthy. From the film's summary we know the plot follows McCarthy's Tammy, who heads on a road trip with her grandmother (Susan Sarandon, playing way older than she is) after learning her husband had been cheating on her. The rest of the cast is also fabulous, featuring, among others, Kathy Bates, Allison Janney, and Toni Collette.
McCarthy's box office draw is unimpeachable, we just hope this effort is more The Heat than Identity Thief. What makes us think it's more like the former than the latter: the movie is co-written by McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone and directed by Falcone.
