The Oscar VFX Short List Shows What Will Have to Face Off Against 'Gravity'

Late today, the Academy the remaining contenders in the Visual Effects category, but we all know what's going to win this one, don't we? Sorry, The Lone Ranger.

Late today, the Academy the remaining contenders in the Visual Effects category, but we all know what's going to win this one, don't we? Sorry, The Lone Ranger.

Of course it seems impossible that the team behind Gravity will lose this award—having basically created outer space without leaving Earth and all—but technically there is still a race. So the other films competing for a nomination are: Elysium, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, Oblivion, Star Trek Into Darkness, Thor: The Dark World, Pacific Rim, World War Z, and, yes, The Lone Ranger. Remember those killer bunnies in that movie?

Ultimately, this is one of the few obvious predictions in this year's complicated Oscar race.
