The trailer for Million Dollar Arm out today takes a dose of Mad Men (the presence of Jon Hamm) a dose of Jerry Maguire (sports agent) and wraps it all up in an Disney glow (think The Rookie).
The PG-rated movie–none of Don Draper's wild exploits here, or at least none shown—tells the story of J.B. Bernstein, a down-on-his luck agent who creates a contest in India with the hope of finding great cricket pitchers to bring to America and the MLB. The trailer's tone is inspiration by way of cultural understanding and physical triumph. Ultimately this could all be very sappy, but sometimes these films turn out good-yet-sappy.
Perhaps the biggest question is how Jon Hamm does carrying a movie, something he hasn't been tasked with yet.
