Welcome to the Box Office Report, where old people rule the day.
1. Ender's Game (Lion's Gate): $28 million in 3,407 theaters
In the end, Ender's fatal flaw will likely be that it doesn't resonate with today's teens. The $28 million was good for the top of the box office this weekend. But with a budget north of $100 million, and a Thor sequel coming next weekend, this movie is far from a success. Ender's was supposed to be a winning sci-fi Y.A. property but the majority of its opening weekend audience were over 25-years-old. Ender's is not The Hunger Games or Twilight, properties popular with current teens. Ender's Game was a book for an older crowd -- a very defensive older crowd, mind you -- but an older crowd none the less.
2. Jackass Presents: Bad Grampa (Paramount): $20.5 million in 3,345 theaters [Week 2]
Meanwhile, Johnny Knoxville and company are still making a ton of money on their relatively low budget prank movie.
3. Last Vegas (CBS): $16.5 million in 3,065 theaters
But this weekend was all about old people at the box office. Harrison Ford grumped it up in Ender's Game while Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline enjoyed their new rendition of "The Hangover, Seniors Edition," which debuted to mild success. Older audiences turned out in droves for this one, too.
