Latest Trailer for 'The Counselor' Showcases A Sexy, Campy Cameron Diaz

The latest trailer for Ridley Scott's The Counselor—a thriller based on an original screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy to be released Oct. 25—gives further insight in what is shaping up to be a potentially fascinating performance by Cameron Diaz.

The latest trailer for Ridley Scott's The Counselor—a thriller based on an original screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy to be released Oct. 25—gives further insight in what is shaping up to be a potentially fascinating performance by Cameron Diaz. 

The two-and-a half minute trailer, released this morning, features actor Michael Fassbender as the titular counselor (lawyer, not psychologist) proposing to his gorgeous girlfriend and making a drug deal with a pair of unsavory characters (Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt). Dean Norris, who plays Breaking Bad's DEA agent Hank Schrader, shows up briefly at the end to inspect a container of, well, something. As is the case with most of Scott's films, the footage is sleek, beautifully shot, and very, very bloody.

Diaz plays Malkina, one half of a very wealthy couple that also includes Bardem, and a role that Oliver Lyttelton of Indiewire blog The Playlist calls "probably the meatiest part in the script." In February 2012, Lyttelton imagined that the role, Diaz's first flashy outing since 2011's Bad Teacher, would go to Penelope Cruz, who, unlike Diaz, is known for playing sultry, hyper-sexualized characters. (Cruz does make an appearance in the film, starring as Fassbender's girlfriend, Laura.) From what we can tell, however, Diaz, accessorized with cheetah spot tattoo on her back and raccoon-style black eyeliner, more than holds her own, reading her lines with an affected swagger and sort of sassy jadedness that comes across as intentionally campy. (Her reading of the line "the slaughter to come is probably beyond our imagining" is especially coy).
