Kiernan Shipka's Next Career Test: 'Flowers in the Attic'
Kiernan Shipka has always been Mad Men's small wonder. Now she'll get the opportunity to further test her acting muscle in the Lifetime reboot of the incesty cult classic novel Flowers in the Attic.
Kiernan Shipka has always been Mad Men's small wonder. Now she'll get the opportunity to further test her acting muscle in the Lifetime reboot of the incesty cult classic novel Flowers in the Attic.
According to Deadline's Nellie Andreeva, Shipka and Mason Dye were cast as the oldest of the two Dollganger siblings in the movie. Shipka's Cathy Dollganger develops an incestuous relationship with her brother Chris while trapped in the titular attic by their religious fanatic grandmother set to be played by Ellen Burstyn.
It's obviously a racy role (played before by Kristy Swanson), but that's nothing Shipka can't handle after six seasons of conveying the emotional turmoil of Sally Draper from childhood masturbation to teenage rebellion. (It should be noted however that she still doesn't watch full episodes of that show.)
It's hard to know how the Lifetime movie will turn out. It is, after all, a Lifetime movie, and the source material has an inherent amount of camp. But it will certainly be worth watching to see if this is an indication of where Shipka's career is headed following Mad Men's upcoming final season. Shipka hasn't done much notable work outside of Mad Men. Her role in the Sundance film Very Good Girls—where she joined a good cast including Peter Sarsgaard and Elizabeth Olsen—wasn't even mentioned in The Hollywood Reporter's review. And while we loved her cameo on Don't Trust the B----, we can't say that it showed us how much she could do.
Hopefully Flowers in the Attic will. We're rooting for you, Kiernan. (And we want your entire wardrobe.)
