Sorry, Mortal Instruments, but Divergent, though still nearly a year away from opening, will likely win the Y.A.-book-adaptation buzz war this weekend. The first footage from the Shailene Woodley-starring film was unveiled this afternoon, and MTV will give it airtime during this Sunday's Video Music Awards pre-show.
For the Divergent newbies the footage might not mean much. It-girl and herb-enthusiast Woodley plays Tris Prior, a girl living in a dystopian Chicago where people are divided based on personality traits. Tris, however, is "divergent," meaning she doesn't fit into any of the society's "factions." This teaser, for what will probably only be a teaser at the awards show on Sunday, gives viewers a quick glance at Tris, her icy enemy played by Kate Winslet, and her love interest, the smoldering Theo James. (Recognize him? He's the guy who died after having sex with Lady Mary on Downton Abbey.) The teaser also shows some of the characters jumping off of a train. There's a lot of jumping off of things in these books.
Back in 2011, fans got a first look at then-untested property The Hunger Games during the VMAs, and look what happened to that franchise. Divergent could make quite a splash when it opens next March.
