'Pacific Rim' Is All Rock-'Em-Sock-'Em Robots — Now with a Gigantic Boat

This glimpse of the robots-versus-monsters movie was supposed to be for the eyes of a privileged few at WonderCon, but now there's an extended look for all to see, with a bit more about the plot. Not that there seems to be that much plot, but still: that boat!

To the glee of a certain segment on the Internet—a certain huge segment—Warner Bros. and Guillermo Del Toro released footage Monday of the summer blockbuster Pacific Rim. This glimpse of the July robots-versus-monsters movie was supposed to be for the eyes of a privileged few at WonderCon, but now there's an extended look for all to see, with a bit more about the plot. Not that there seems to be that much plot. Indeed, it's still giant robots versus giant monsters, but some of this first does look damn cool.

What we learn: Well, "alien life" comes out the Pacific, and humans create the Jaeger program, which involves "two pilots mind melding through memories with the body of a machine." The humans start winning against the monsters. Then the human stop winning. But then the human rise up and plan on "canceling the apocalypse," in the words of Idris Elba's captain character. We knew most of this already, but it's a bit more explicit than Del Toro's earlier viral campaign.

Really, though, this thing is about a robot hitting a monster with a boat.
