The New 'Man of Steel' Trailer Is Making Believers of Us All

We've been a little cold on Zack Snyder's heavenly, heavily therapeutic Superman adaptation, but we're starting to change our minds with the fabulous new trailer that debuted last night — hell, everyone is.

We've been a little cold on Zack Snyder's heavenly, heavily therapeutic Superman adaptation, Man of Steel, but we're starting to change our minds with the fabulous new trailer that debuted last night—hell, everyone is. Just like Pa Kent tells Clark that he's the "answer" to the question of whether we're alone in the universe, this trailer is the answer to the question of whether fanboys (and girls) will actually like one of the most anticipated—and already derided—blockbusters of the summer.

The new trailer, which you can watch in full below, actually looks like a superhero movie, and not like some lost Malick film in which everyone other than Superman gets left on the cutting room floor. It does away with the whole choral soundtrack thing in favor of something more traditionally heroic, and it gives us a much needed taste of some of the other characters—plus, you know, some action. Russell Crowe as Jor-El sends his child to Earth, Kevin Costner as Pa Kent comforts young Clark, Michael Shannon as the mysterious General Zod gets really mad, and Amy Adams is an inquisitive Lois Lane. A voiceover from Lois seems to imply, as many are pointing out, that the character has been reporting on Superman's deeds before actually knowing the man himself: "For some he was a guardian angel. For others, a ghost who never quite fit in."

While the trailers up until this point were almost oppressively serious, we even get a little bit of humor in this one, as Lois and Superman flirt about what that "S" symbol on his suit means in some sort of interrogation room.

And the trailer is already winning over the comic geek base: El Mayimbe of Latino Review tweeted: "Hear that? That's the sound of fanboys squealing like teen girls at a Bieber concert. Way to go MAN OF STEEL." Borys Kit, who runs The Hollywood Reporter's "geek blog" Heat Vision, wrote, "You will believe a fanboy can cry." (Tears among grown men are apparently a thing when it comes to this trailer.) Kit alluded to an Oscar nomination for "best trailer." Which brings us to something else: We all have to keep in mind that this could simply be a very well executed trailer. Zack Snyder, as our Richard Lawson wrote, has given us reason for pause in the past. Still, the new trailer is inspiring higher hopes, even among those who are admittedly wary. HitFix's Drew McWeeny wrote that "based on this trailer, I think it's safe to say Zack Snyder is going to turn out to be a positively inspired choice for director."
