Sofia Coppola's 'Bling Ring' Trailer Looks as Wild as the Real Tabloid Crime Story

The true story was just begging to be a movie: a group of Los Angeles teens transforms into a crime ring, burglarizing the homes of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. And now here it is, with a trashy-meets-classy, distorted new Hollywood glow.

And now here it is, with a trashy-meets-classy, distorted new Hollywood glow — our first real look at Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, and it borrows a tag line straight from Nancy Jo Sales' Vanity Fair 2010 story about the group: "let's go shopping." (Sales's piece, which is reportedly the basis for the film, she wrote that the group's alleged leader, Rachel Lee, called their thieving "shopping.") As with any Sofia Coppola film, the trailer is highly stylized, and will probably get a lot of attention for the shots of Emma Watson sexy-dancing. (YouTube commenters are asking for GIFs.) The Playlist already made the comparison to Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers, which also features stars with young fan bases doing very bad things.

It's still unclear how faithful The Bling Ring can be — the reporting on the subject, whether that be from Vanity Fair or TMZ, is plenty salacious on its own. But Paris Hilton herself is guest-starring, so there's that — even if Marie Antoinette wasn't exactly what you'd call faithful non-fiction.
