'Mad Men' Season 6 Fashion Looks Like a Celebrity Scrapbook from the '60s
We're no fashion historians, but we looked at some old photographs of style icons against the brand-new Mad Men promo shots — and we saw some striking parallels.
Not to be hypocritical or anything, but today we got our hands on some great new promo shots for the upcoming season of Mad Men, and boy are we excited about them. Of course, we're reluctant to use these images to predict any plot points about the new season, but we're going a little nuts over the fashion. And the clothes on Mad Men do have inspirations both relevant to the show and the history of American style: Costume designer Janie Bryant said in a recent interview that her "inspiration really starts with the script," but also that the "big resource of inspiration for me are old photographs, to really see how people wore their clothing and getting inspiration from real life." We're no fashion historians, but we looked at some old photographs of '60s style icons against the latest Mad Men promo shots—and we saw some striking parallels.
Megan Draper

Don's wife—with her sky-high hair, dramatic hair, and more free-flowing silhouettes—is giving us a very pre-Vietnam Jane Fonda look.

Peggy Olson and Sally Draper
Frank Ockenfels/AMC
It's nice to see the once sartorially challenged Peggy embracing some of the mod styles championed by the likes of Twiggy, who traveled to the U.S. in a splashy visit in 1967, the year the series left off. In what maybe says something about Peggy's style, we're also seeing that on the newly fashion-forward Sally Draper.

Betty Draper

With Betty's clear penchant for ruffles, we're seeing some echoes of this Julie Christie outfit.

Joan Holloway
We've had some trouble finding an equivalent for Joan. Something about her outfits just screams Joan Holloway and no one else, but perhaps there's a slight analogy in the dress Natalie Wood wore to the 1968 Oscars, what with its glittery accents and big earrings.
