At the end of last week the Internet was alight with rumors of Beyoncé's set list for the Super Bowl, which included songs she would perform with the newly reunited Destiny's Child, the 90s pop group that releases its comeback album tomorrow. But now there are questions as to whether Destiny's Child is actually going to be joining Beyoncé on the field Sunday in New Orleans, with a widely quoted "new" interview debunking the rumors — but we've found a schedule opening that may reveal more than a one-woman halftime show after all.
People, the Huffington Post, and other media outlets have been citing this WRUG Media interview with Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams, in which she says that the rumors of the Super Bowl reunion performance are "not true."
But there's a caveat here. This interview with Williams was published to YouTube on January 23: Before the Us Weekly set list scoop came out. In an interview with MTV News Thursday, Williams was a little more coy, saying "Unfortunately, I honestly can't say" when asked about the rumors. As she says in the WRUG video above, Williams is appearing in the musical Fela!, but according to Lindsay Tolar, a publicist for the Shakespeare Theatre Company in D.C. where the show is running at the Sidney Harman Hall, Williams is going to scheduled to be out of the production from January 31 through February 4. Tolar explained in an email to The Atlantic Wire that the theater did not know whether Williams's absence has anything to do with the Super Bowl rumors. Still, the fact that she won't be in Fela! means she could be performing in Sunday's Super Bowl. We're not counting out a reunion just yet, even though photos of rehearsals posted to Beyoncé's Tumblr don't indicate any specific Destiny's Child participation. We've reached out to a representative for Williams to see if we can learn anything more.
